Change Motherboard Serial Number Hp

No. Why would you want to?

I can't imagine a good reason for doing this.
Why not contact HP and see what they have to say?

Is there anyway to change the serial number that is output in dmidecode if there is no option in the BIOS to change it. For some of our servers that have replaced motherboards its hard to keep track of the original serials that are used for warranty information. Platform is RHEL and this is more targeted towards the HP DL165's. Fixing manufacturer name, model and serial. I have just replaced a motherboard under warranty and am trying to find the utility to change the S/N in the BIOS. How to change the MTM and Serial numbers on a Lenovo L520 in the system BIOS. Turn on the computer. Your BIOS serial number should be changed.

It's like filing the serial numbers off of guns....

... they're probably stolen and they don't want them to be traced. :-0

Usage is pretty straightforward and you simply choose your drive from the drop down box, enter the new serial number and click the Change button. Do note the serial number format as mentioned in the window is made up of 8 hex characters from 0-9 and A-F split by a “-” into two groups of 4. You will then need to reboot to commit the changes. Knowing how to change a Windows serial number is vital when your computer is locked out from receiving essential Windows updates, which provide the security features necessary to safely maintain a connection to the internet. They don't include serial number, manufacturer info., etc. In the BIOS however and this makes it difficult for systems monitoring and inventorying software to distinguish one system from another - especially if we do a clean wipe on the system. You have to change it in the BIOS settings you should see the value in there somewhere. It depends on the manufacturer. You will need to change it to the same Serial number you had before on your old motherboard (system board) Usually you can find it on their website under the warranty section for your account.

Which Serial Number?

The only one that I'm aware of that is shown by the BIOS is the CPU's Serial Number which should be switched on By default on all new hardware.
So if you want to change this Serial Number you need to change the CPU as it is encoded into the CPU and can be used to trace the individual computer that it was fitted to originally.
The other numbers are for things like a BIOS String which identifies the Make & Model of the M'Board and changing this would result in someone looking for the wrong Drivers at best and quite likely looking for the wrong thing all together at worst and loading the wrong drivers causing the system to no longer work.
While it is Technically Possible to prevent the BIOS Reporting the CPU Serial Number or even to misreport it that would involve writing a new BIOS Instruction set for every Model or variation of existing models and even resulting in killing the NB's if this was applied to the wrong Model or Revision Numbers. So exactly what is it you want to do here any much more importantly Why do you want or feel the need to do this?
This is something that I would expect from people dealing in Stolen NB's as there is no other reason to attempt this.

Your all wrong

I just wanted to point out there are other reasons to need to change a BIOS S/N. We use a utility that records the S/N from the BIOS and adds it to our inventory database. When we replace a mother board, the S/N in the BIOS no longer matches the S/N physically on the device. We need to make those match. Dell has a utilty to accomplish this, but I have yet to find on from HP. There is a section in the HP BIOS named 'Notebook Serial Number' and that is what needs to be changed. I know this is an incredibly old post, but people still find and read this stuff, and no one gave a good answer, they just accused him of stealing the laptops. (He may have, but thats not the topic.)

Hp Change Motherboard Serial Number

Glad we're helping this guy defraud HP and his customers

Since there are local HP resellers in Brazil, importing US product is called a 'gray market' distribution channel.
Since a warranty is valuable, and buying a truckload of stolen laptops in Miami and selling them in Brazil would void the warranty, the guy is most likely doing at least two of these three things:
1) Fencing stolen merchandise
2) Attempting to Defraud HP Corp
3) Attempting to Defraud HP customers in Brazil
4) Competing unfairly with HP Dealers in Brazil
5) Evading taxes and import duties (which is why it costs more to buy it legally).
Other than that, it's perfectly legit....

S/N BIOS change utility

From what I know, it's a utility called SNZero.exe. It is exclusively internal to HP Service Centers and repair engineers. It is proprietary and not available to the public. If you need to have the S/N changed, you will need to contact HP Support and work with them or an authorized service center to have it changed.
We just had a system board replaced on one of our laptops and the repair tech that came out, used the utility and changed the BIOS S/N all as apart of the warranty call.

I intend to use the users BIOS/Motherboard Serial Number to uniquely identify a user. When I refer to the BIOS/Motherboard Serial Number I am referring to the number returned when you type in: wmic BIOS get SerialNumber

Regarding the BIOS/Motherboard' Serial Number:

  • Can the user change this serial number? Either using third party applications or through Windows.
  • According to this forum post, not all vendors supply a motherboard UUID so I cannot use this to uniquely identify the user. Do venders mostly/always supply/fill out the BIOS/Motherboard Serial Number or will I also find some computers dont have a serial number?
  • I have tried to uniquely identify a user using the Hard Drive's Serial Number. But I have first hand run into the issue that it can change and that Windows API is unreliable and can return different values. See my post here. Do you know if I may experience the same issue for the BIOS/Motherboard's Serial Number?
  • Can a standard process (Standard Windows User) retrieve the BIOS/Motherboard Serial Number? Or does the process need to be elevated (Admin User)?

Just to confirm the BIOS is the motherboard, correct? I am a little unclear because I thought the BIOS is the simple software installed on the motherboard.

  1. Yes, a power user can change nearly all serial numbers using either service utilities like AMI DMIEdit or by editing BIOS chip contents manually.
  2. Most desktop motherboards right now are coming with empty MBSN and UUID, except for ASUS ones. The only PCs that almost always have valid identification data are branded ones (i.e. Dell or HP workstations).
  3. Nearly all 'individual' data can be changed somehow, and virtual devices makes the whole situation even more complex.
  4. It depends on how you will try to access it, but general answer is 'No, you need administrator rights'. Read more here.

My 5 cents on this: just don't use HW-based identification, it brings more problems then solves.
