When you download a game from the Microsoft Store, it installs automatically. While the game is downloading and installing, it appears in the Queue section of My games & apps. If you choose to install the game later, go to My games & apps > Games, and then select the game title from Ready to install. Jump to Downloading Content to the Hard Drive from the Online Marketplace - Access the online marketplace. You may purchase games. Click “Confirm Download.” Pay for the game through your Microsoft account or with a credit card.

[Tip]Installing physical games from the network

Not sure if a lot of people know this or not, but figured I'd share just in case. If you have a few multiple disc based games that you wish to leave installing using the network so they can install one right after another including the updates, read on.

I own a lot of physical games and every now and then, I'll pick up a few at the same time. I recently got Dead Rising 1, 2, 4 and Resident Evil 5 physical. Before we continue, if you have data caps, don't bother since this will simply consume more bandwidth.

Microsoft Store

To get it done:

  1. Insert game

  2. Cancel the installation (leave disc inserted)

  3. Go to the Xbox Store and search for the game

  4. Instead of Buy, you'll see a 'Install', select it.

  5. Game will download from the Xbox Store instead of the disc.

  6. Insert next game and repeat step 2 through 5.

Xbox One Games Without Disc

This is only useful for a few scenarios.

Store
  1. You wish to leave a few disc based games installing without having to stop and switching the discs.

  2. Need to reinstall your library if something happened to the drive.

  3. If for some reason you wanted to download a disc based game from another region (game must be available to download in that region, also this will require you to change your consoles region, but the disc will allow you to trigger the download)

  4. You have a faulty Blu-Ray Drive on your console that is having a hard time reading the discs. YMMV on this one, if the drive isn't working at all, it won't help, but if it still somewhat reads the games, downloading will help preserve the drive.
