Sony VAIOs include a multi-purpose application called VAIO Care that enables administrators to back up and restore files, perform troubleshooting and diagnostic tests, and recover Windows. Computer manufacturers used to include recovery disks with PCs to allow users to restore the operating system, but makers like Sony now store the recovery files to the hard drive. If numerous errors appear when you attempt to use Windows, or if you can't boot into the OS at all, rather than wait for Sony to ship you recovery disks -- potentially forcing your business to go without critical equipment for a short period -- you can restore the VAIO yourself.

1.

Click 'Start,' then 'All Programs.' Click the 'VAIO Care' folder and then select 'VAIO Care' from the list of applications.

2.

Choose 'Recovery & Restore' from the left pane. Click 'Recovery,' then 'Recover Computer.'

3.

Click 'Yes,' when prompted, to restart the Sony VAIO. Choose 'Tools' from VAIO Care Rescue.

4.

Click 'Start Advanced Recovery Wizard,' then 'Skip Rescue.' Click 'Factory Condition,' then 'Next.'

5.

Select 'Yes, I'm Sure' and then click 'Start Recovery' to restore the Sony VAIO. The process may take up to two hours.

6.

Click 'Restart' to reboot the VAIO and set up Windows.

Tip

  • If you're unable to boot into Windows, start the computer and then press 'F10' when the VAIO logo appears on-screen to go to the VAIO Recovery Environment.
